No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
