Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
